10 Essential Items for the Best  Winter Commute

Introduction to Winter Commuting

If you are like me and you do not necessarily love the cold, commuting to work or school during the winter months can be dreadful. I have suffered many teeth-chattering days waiting for the car to warm up, and the bus or train to arrive. Of course, these are not my fondest winter memories.  However, when I am prepared; when I am warm and toasty, it can feel quite cozy… the music in my ears, my body feeling warm, with comfortable insulated feet, makes all the difference. If you have traveled in the winter, you know the drill. As temperatures drop, we must contend with harsh weather conditions that can significantly affect our commute, I’m talking about biting winds, snow falling, as well as icy streets and roads, the whole gamut. The elements of winter can make our travel dangerous and can put us in a negative headspace if we do not take the proper precautions.

Winter, like all other seasons, should be appreciated and it can be. Although Cold weather can increase our risk of getting hurt or sick; it also has some cold yet beautiful moments. The various elements of winter just serve as confirmation as to why it is essential for those of us who travel to work and school to dress and prepare adequately. Investing in products to counter the hazardous aspect of winter will make us travel with confidence and help us to embrace the days ahead. Having proper clothes, equipment, and accessories will add to preventive healthcare and increase pleasure during our journey. Trust me, the inability to stay dry can turn a good commute into unnecessary misery.

As the days become shorter and colder, varying weather conditions like snow and wind can make it hard to not only stay warm, but to see, and walk as well. Combining the winter elements with traveling during those dark hours of the morning or evening presents a totally different factor to consider, which is visibility.  For some of us who have to navigate dark pathways and roads to get to our cars, bus stops, and/or the train stations, these dim hours can make seeing difficult for not only us but vehicles on the road.

With all these factors we commuters must remain vigilant and agile to overcome the perils of winter. Our happiness, comfort, attitude and of course safety should be a priority. Knowing these challenges are coming every year makes it vital for us commuters to be equipped with the right products so we can navigate the winter season like champions.

This post discusses our response to winter conditions and how the following top ten products could allow us to embrace winter months with good health while maintaining warm and pleasant travels.

  1. Overhead Wireless headphones

The first essential winter prep has been told to us by our parents since childhood; keep your ears, head, hands, and feet well covered. Yes, of course, this means hats, scarves, gloves, boots, socks, all that good stuff. But a great commute involves feeling good inside and out. For me that involves entertainment; music, games, YouTube videos, streaming etc. A great cushy pair of over-the-ear wireless headphones can keep our ears warm while allowing us to enjoy various forms of entertainment as we travel. I personally like the  MOVSSOU E7 Active Noise Cancelling Headphones since they provide a long playtime. The company states up to 30 hours; truth be told, I never counted. These headphones have soft material that insulates your ears which contributes to its awesome quality of sound including the quality of phone calls. The microphone feature of the MOVSSOU E7 isolates the sound of your conversation, during phone calls. Being able to have a hands-free clear call while the wind is blowing and traffic blearing in addition to, their ability to keep our ears warm in the process; is the reason I like the  MOVSSOU E7 Headphones.

2.) Hot Hands Hand Warmers for Winter Commuting

Hands warming over an open fire demonstrating a need for warm hands during the winter

When it’s bone chilling cold, oh baby it stings, right?  One thing I love in the winter is the effectiveness of pocket handwarmers.  Hand warmers are a practical and simple solution to combat the chill that can accompany our daily winter travels. They provide warmth quickly and feel as comforting as warming your hands near a fire.

There are primarily two types of hand warmers available: disposable and reusable. Disposable hand warmers like the Hot Hands brand are convenient to share and often single-use, making them ideal for short trips or unanticipated weather conditions. They typically consist of a mixture of iron powder, water, and salt, which, when activated, generates heat for several hours.  Then there are reusable hand warmers designed for multiple uses. Often powered by a rechargeable battery or chemical reaction, these warmers can be reactivated by boiling in water or through electronic charging. The flexibility of use allows for consistent warmth without the environmental impact associated with disposables and may be more cost-effective over time. However, in defense of the reusable which I consistently buy even though I have invested in a rechargeable; I will say, that the thinness and flexible fabric of the disposable ones make it easy to put into gloves and still utilize your hands without something bulky restricting your hand movement. Not to mention for the number of units you get when you purchase Disposable Hands Warmers the price isn’t that bad.

To use hand warmers effectively, it is essential to consider the right placement. For maximum efficiency, they can be kept inside pockets, gloves, or mittens, ensuring that warmth is concentrated where it is most needed. Holding them in your hands as you wait at bus stops or train stations can provide immediate relief from cold temperatures. Moreover, hand warmers can be an excellent addition to winter jackets; tucking them into inner pockets is a great way to increase that toasty feeling as we commute.

3. The Classic Thermos

Let’s talk about these fancy travel cups. “It keeps the drink cold” or “It keeps the drink hot”. For many of us commuting during the winter months, an insulated travel container/cup is an added luxury that makes our commute enjoyable. The primary benefit of an insulated travel mug lies in its ability to keep beverages hot for extended periods. This feature allows commuters to enjoy their coffee, tea, or hot chocolate at their preferred temperature, even hours after brewing.

I see all these wonderful travel cups that people use, and I am sure they are great. But my number 3 has never failed and only keeps getting better, which is the wonderful and reliable Thermos. It has been around for decades and is not only a classic travel container but has experienced product upgrades, new options, features, and colors that keep it addressing social changes. Crafted to fit easily into vehicle cup holders or backpack pockets, makes them an ideal choice for an on-the-go lifestyle. Furthermore, many Thermoses offer some of the best secure lids to prevent spills, addressing a common concern that many of us have while navigating crowded transportation systems. There are so many different types allowing us to choose the one or ones that best suit our needs.

If you have ever had a Thermos, you know they are great.  A Thermos for soup or food can provide a nice hearty winter lunch that will remain hot for hours. There will be no need to find a kitchen to warm it up, it will be ready when you are.   The THERMOS, ICON Series, Stainless Steel Mug has a convenient handle with their patented sealed leak proof closure.  It lets us carry our morning coffee and quickly store it when we need to free up our hands during travel. It keeps coffee and other beverages hot for up to 7hours and cold for up to 22 hours. I say this with full disclosure and bias, for me it is associated with the wonderful memories of Coco filled Christmases, Camping, and my mother’s homemade chicken and dumplings soup. I had my original Thermos for over 20 years before I sold it at a garage sale and regret selling it because it was in excellent condition and of course the memories I associate with it; it really did last the test of time. Thermoses for us are staple products, they are great for travel, nice walks, and holiday gifts.

The main reason this brand of products made the list is it meets the requirements for selecting a great insulated travel container; It has stainless steel options which tend to offer superior durability and insulation compared to plastic variants, it has double-wall construction which  enhances the heat retention while keeping the exterior cool to the touch, the size capacity of the body and mouth of the containers make them easy to fill and refill. In addition, they are easy to clean and have dishwasher-safe components.  However, for those like me who ride crowded buses, and/or trains and who have to maneuver through crowded city street the best feature is the easy to secure function and easy access when opening and locking the top or lid.

4.) Winter-Ready Footwear

If you ever got snow or water in your shoes while traveling; you know it isn’t  a good feeling. That is why winter-ready footgear is our number four winter commute item. There is an expression that many of us know “When your feet hurt, everything hurts” I am sure this goes for discomfort as well. Foot protection against snow, rain and slippery, icy conditions are important in the winter. When choosing winter boots and socks for our commute, there are certain key aspects to consider.

First and foremost, is insulation. Insulated boots and socks help keep the feet warm during freezing temperatures; this is a huge contributing factor to a pleasant commute. Boots that are lined with materials such as Thinsulate or shearling, will provide effective warmth without adding excess weight. This is particularly important for those who must walk long distances or stand outside while waiting for public transportation.

The Aleader shoes brand makes comfortable winter and snow boots for men and women that meet all the desired features of a good winter boot.  The boots Waterproof material ensures that feet remain warm and dry. The trans non-slip rubber soles allow us to grip the snow and avoid gliding on the ice. I can’t tell you how many slips, and near slips I have experienced due to Icy pathways and soles without the proper material or grip to handle the snow and icy terrain. This to me is one of the more notable features to look for in a winter boot or shoe.  Aleader boots are Thinsulate which is a form of material that not only helps our feet stay warm and dry by trapping body heat, yet also allows moisture to escape.

Other brands, that offer a great selection of comfortable, insulated winter boot for men and women that meet key points for winter are  Sorel offering stylish options for women and men, and Rockmark, specifically their ROCKMARK Winter Mid-Calf Snow Boots for men and women are fashionable and have excellent sneaker like grip. styles that balance function and fashion, ensuring that you can stay both warm and styling during your travels. Overall, investing in quality winter-ready footwear is indispensable for anyone who commutes in chilly weather conditions.

Now, let’s talk about socks. Great socks for the winter are the best. I like to invest in waterproof and insulated sock for the winter season. Waterproof socks are convenient for winter days when your shoes are not insulated and there is a slight chance of rain or snow.

RANDY SUN Waterproof Socks are a wonderful winter wardrobe addition. These “Just-in-case socks” are being recommended because they pair well with sneakers and other non-waterproof shoes. They are a viable choice that will keep our feet dry if we get caught in the rain or snow unexpectedly. Hugsweet’s thermal socks for women and men make a wonderful holiday gift or personal purchase. These socks have soft fabric. Plus, they produce various colors and design options to fit different preferences.

The company that makes a quality pair of soft insulated, waterproof socks with will earn my loyalty for sure.

5.) Base Layering

Layers are the key. We can always take something off, but we cannot put it on if we do not have it.  When it comes to winter necessities, thoughtful consideration of clothing choices should be taken into account. Proper winter attire typically relies on the layering technique, which involves wearing multiple clothing layers to trap heat while allowing moisture management. The right combination of layers not only enhances insulation but also gives us flexibility to regulate body temperature throughout our commute. Our body temperatures fluctuate throughout the day, from being indoors to outdoors, makes being equipped with the correct layering options crucial.

The base layer is the first component in this layering system. This layer should ideally consist of moisture-wicking materials such as merino wool or synthetic fabrics that can be found in thermals and are designed to pull sweat away from the skin. This helps keep the wearer dry and comfortable, preventing the chilling effect of sweat as they transition from a warm indoor environment to colder outdoor climates. Merino wool possesses insulating qualities that will help keep us warm without adding unnecessary bulk or sweatiness. Meriano Tech is a company that specializes in crafting incredible garments from natural merino wool. Their collection includes long sleeves, pants, T-shirts, boxers, socks, neck scarves, and even polo shirts. However, our topic here is the base layer. Merino Tech has developed awesome thermals that allow us to stay warm and dry, without  hindering our movements.

6.) Inner (Mid) Layering

The mid-layer contributions will provide additional padding to help the cold stay out. Fleece or down jackets are popular choices for this segment, as they can provide us with warmth while remaining lightweight. A breathable mid-layer can trap air for insulation while letting body heat escape, reducing the risk of overheating during more vigorous activities, such as walking or cycling. It is essential to choose mid-layers that complement the base layer in terms of functionality and fit. Magcomsen Fleece Jackets offers a versatile selection of designs and materials for bother men and women that will provide the ability to find suitable choices to pair with our wardrobes and base layers.

Finally, the outer shell protects against wind, rain, and snow. A quality winter jacket should be windproof and waterproof while also allowing for breathability. Look for features such as adjustable hoods, cuffs, and hems to ensure a snug fit that can adapt to varying weather conditions. By integrating effective layering options, we can navigate winter’s challenges while staying dry and warm. Incorporating these winter factors while staying mindful of your personal style will help you the look and function you that would make you happy.

7.) Reflective Gear for Safety

Ok, you may be thinking, “Really, Reflective Gear?”  Yes, my dears, “Reflective Gear.” As we discussed previously, those early dark mornings and evening travels to and from can be dangerous moments for those of us who live in areas that are not lit well. Low visibility makes it crucial for commuters to prioritize safety. One effective way to enhance visibility and ensure safety during these darker months is using reflective gear. Reflective gear is designed to catch and reflect light, thereby making us more noticeable to drivers and other commuters. This becomes especially important during early mornings or late afternoons when lighting is limited.

Various types of reflective gear are available to cater to different commuting needs. Reflective vests are among the most popular choices, providing broad visibility with their bright colors and reflective strips. These vests can be worn over regular clothing, making them a convenient option for cyclists, runners, and pedestrians out at dusk or dawn. If that is a route some would like to take, well I say do whatever it takes to be safe. I personally like  High-Intensity Reflective Tape; since I can put them on the front and back straps of a backpack or wherever I deem necessary; without compromising my personal fashion choices.  It has strong industrial-grade adhesives, so it won’t come off easily. It also effectively resists the effects of climate, dust, and aging, while producing an intense reflective glow.

Of course, other reflective accessories like hats, vests, armbands, and sashes offer an excellent solution for those of us seeking greater flexibility. Their lightweight design will allow us to wear them across the chest, on our arms, or legs to ensure reflective visibility is maintained. Reflective gear is particularly beneficial for those who walk, jog, and/or cycle to work which for many is mostly in a signal direction facing away from traffic. Moreover, reflective accessories such as backpack covers and shoe clips provide additional safety measures, enabling commuters like us to enhance our visibility in various settings.

Notably, reflective gear can serve as an important protective measure for all types of commuters, including those driving to work. Whether waiting at a bus stop, riding a bike, or walking to our destination, wearing reflective items can make the difference between being noticed or overlooked by motorists.

8.) Portable Phone Charger

I genuinely believe everyone with a cell phone should have a portable charger.  Years ago, if we had an issue and needed some help, we could use a pay phone or ask anyone, including stores, to use their phone. Well, those days are long gone.

I remember once being let out of work early due to a snowstorm and getting stuck at the bus stop because the bus was delayed for hours. I was cold, my feet were wet, and my phone was dead. Back then there were no portable chargers; well, at least none that I knew. I could not call the transit company to get an update or look for an alternative way to get home. Luckily, once my feet were totally frozen, my body soaked, and I was at the height of frustration and discomfort, the bus came. Today, I would never intentionally leave home without my portable charger; I don’t think any of us should.

Believe it or not, the significant drop in temperature can adversely affect our electronic devices, including smartphones. Freezing weather conditions can lead to accelerated battery drainage, diminishing the longevity of the device during crucial commuting times. This makes it vital for us to have a way to stay connected, which is why a portable should be in our toolkit.

When selecting a portable phone charger, reliability is of utmost importance. There are numerous options available on the market, ranging from lightweight models designed for occasional use to high-capacity chargers that accommodate multiple devices simultaneously. Commute patterns and technology usage should influence our decision. For example, frequent travelers may benefit from chargers boasting high mAh ratings (A higher milliampere-hour (mAh) rating means a battery has more storage and can last longer), ensuring our devices remain charged even during extended journeys.

Opting for a charger with fast charging capabilities can give us the power we need to communicate in an emergency. This technology allows for quicker replenishment of battery life, which is particularly advantageous for those of us who may not have extended intervals between travel segments. Additionally, choosing a charger with built-in safety features, such as overcharge protection, can safeguard our device from potential harm.

Furthermore, portability should not be overlooked; a compact design allows us commuters to easily carry a charger without adding unnecessary bulk. Many brands now offer slim profiles that fit comfortably in pockets or bags. They connect wirelessly directly to the phone via a port or magnetically. All these factors contribute to selecting the best portable charger to meet the needs of us winter commuters efficiently. Preparation of our devices combined with a reliable charging option will allow us to alleviate the anxiety of battery depletion, ensuring that we remain entertained and connected in an emergency as we get around.

9.) Compact Umbrella

I don’t even think I need to advocate for this one. We all know it is coming, those rainy and snow-filled days; those days we wish we could stay in bed and drink coco, but we must commute to our destination of success regardless of the weather. These types of days are challenging and unpredictable. For that reason, a strong compact umbrella is a pivotal item on this list. It will help us navigate these chaotic weather patterns, providing enough protection against unexpected downpours or flurries of snow. Its convenience and ease of use make it essential to our travel arsenal. We don’t remember how vital they are to us until we need a good one.

When selecting the right compact umbrella for our winter commute, durability should be a major consideration. It is crucial to opt for models that can withstand the elements, particularly fierce winds and heavy snowfall. For instance, umbrellas with reinforced ribs made from fiberglass or high-strength steel, can prevent breakage in inclement weather.  Additionally, umbrellas with vented canopies allow wind to pass through rather than exerting pressure on the structure, thus reducing the risk of it inverting or breaking…I hate that.

Portability is another vital feature that we should prioritize. A good umbrella for daily travel should be lightweight and easily foldable, enabling us commuters to store it in our bags or briefcases without sacrificing too much space. Products like the Repel brand are easy to store and made with a strong Teflon-coated, doubled layered vent to allow it to withstand heavy rain and winds. The company even offers a lifetime replacement warranty on their products. Yeah, they said it (Google their warranty info). Again, I know there are many great umbrellas out there, but Repel‘s collection of strong compact umbrellas and warranty are what made this product a feature within our 9th recommended item. Oh! there is one more thing I like about carrying umbrellas in general; even during the summer I can use my neck fan and put up my umbrella for shade when the sun is beaming on me. If it stays in our bag, then it will always be ready whenever we need it.

10.) Quality Winter Backpack

What is this? Sixth grade?  Remember when only school-aged children used backpacks? Well, many of us adult commuters got wise and started realizing the benefits they can add to our daily journeys. One of the biggest benefits of using a backpack when traveling is the freedom it offers us. With our hands free, we can utilize our phones or drink our coffees, without the hassle of holding a briefcase or carrying a bag that constantly gets in the way, falls off, or digs into our shoulders. A good backpack will offer multiple compartments, allowing for efficient organization of things like lunch, computers, wallet, and other desired items.  Quick access pockets allow us to store and retrieve frequently used items, like bus passes, cell phones, and/or money.

In addition, Integrating a backpack into our daily routine can lead to better posture and reduced back fatigue. Consistently using a good backpack can turn a mere carrying tool into your ally against back discomfort. We should think twice about what we throw over our shoulders or lug in our hands to work and/or school.

When selecting our backpack, we should also consider the size and weight distribution. A well-padded back panel and adjustable shoulder straps can help alleviate pressure points. Look for models with not only multiple compartments but compartments that evenly distribute load. Remember, bigger isn’t always better; choose a size that fits your needs without overstuffing. I also like purchasing bookbags that are waterproof or water resistant, since I carry multiple devices and work-related documents.

A great, professional-looking backpack that meets all these requirements is the Bange series. They address various needs, such as insulation, waterproofing, and adequate storage for supplies, as well as comfortable, adjustable padded straps.

Insulation is a crucial feature when choosing winter backpacks. This aspect ensures that the items stored inside, such as electronics, snacks, or clothing layers, remain protected from extreme temperatures. The BANGE Smart Business backpack, has a sleek look, multiple pockets, and compartments; can hold up to a 17 inches computer and designed to withstand the elements. Another highly recommended winter backpack brand is  North Face known for its quality materials and thoughtful design. The brand is famous for producing products that are especially good in inclement weather.

Although comfort is paramount—especially on those long days and of course we should opt for adjustable, padded straps that don’t dig into our shoulders. I also should mention, breathable back panel is a bonus, especially if we find ourselves caught in a sudden downpour or rushing to catch a bus. But let’s not forget style! Choosing a design that complements our work attire and expresses our unique personality will help us love utilizing our backpacks. A great backpack can reflect our unique identity while also being functional.

Conclusion: Staying Comfortable and Safe

In conclusion, the right products and preparation can make a significant difference in winter commuting. As winter months approach, going back and forth to school or work can become a daunting task, often accompanied by numerous challenges. We should recognize the importance of being prepared with the essentials that will not only keep us comfortable but also ensure our safety during those daily trips. The right supplies can significantly reduce the unpleasant aspects associated with the winter commute, by adding value and security to the days ahead.
