Introduction to Commutercating
If I did the math, I am sure my time traveling would equate to years spent going to work, school, college, meetings, etc. When I lived in metropolitan areas such as NYC, NJ and PA, I only used public transportation; at that time gas prices were high, and the train station was one bus stop away. For much of my adult life having a car was not cost-effective or convenient. Not to say I have never had a car. Yes, I used a car to travel as well. I can honestly say, my commuting history is like that 1980’s Steve Martin Movie: Trains, Planes, and Automobiles and sometimes equally funny and frustrating. Like me; I am sure for many of you reading this post commuting is an essential part of your daily lives. It often receives negative attention due to the stress of overcrowding and of course the time spent traveling back and forth. However, that time we spend going to work, school or wherever, presents an opportunity to enrich our lives, so why waste it? This blog is dedicated to discussing various aspects of getting around and how to make the time we spend traveling beneficial to us.
Creating Balance
What I like most about commuting is that it creates a clear separation between work and personal life. This transition time allows me to mentally prepare for the workday ahead or unwind after. When going to work I typically utilize this time to read, meditate, plan my day, or take a nap to extend my sleep. Your return trip home is a great time to decompress through music, podcast, or streaming on the phone. It may not seem like much but the ability to refresh and relax can improve your overall well-being.
Networking Opportunities
Commuting can also serve as a valuable networking opportunity. Travelers who share the same route may engage in conversations that could lead to new friendships or professional connections. These interactions, even if brief, can provide insights and opportunities that would not be available in a typical office setting. I am not the person to start gabbing with every person I see on the bus or train. However, I have engaged in some wonderful conversations while riding or waiting for public transportation. No, I would not recommend exchanging contact details every time you share some friendly words, but every now and then it could be worth it. You’d be surprised what great discoveries could be obtained through discussions with our fellow riders.
Productivity
Furthermore, many individuals use commute time for personal development. Reading books, learn a new language, engaging in online courses, or studying while commuting can significantly contribute to skill enhancement and help you meet your goals as well as create some. This time is a great opportunity to get something achieved; especially if your personal time is limited.
Conclusion
While commuting may seem like a mundane aspect of daily life, it possesses numerous benefits that can enhance our overall experience. By understanding and embracing these advantages, we can transform this daily journey into a productive and rewarding part of our lives
